When I was younger, I dreamt of graduating with my degree in Interior Design and designing homes in the Texas area. I pursued that dream by enrolling in the degree plan in college and loved everything about it. But, I kept hitting roadblock after roadblock. Nothing was going the way I wanted it to and it all seemed to be much harder than it should’ve been. I was at a dead-end job, I was broke, my grades were suffering and the college was a huge pain in my you-know-what.
I was lost, confused and had no idea what to do. So, I paused, prayed, and assessed my situation by asking myself, “Am I supposed to be pursuing this dream?”
As I asked myself this question with ugly tears flooding my face, my wonderful and amazing husband, Jack stepped into the room. He listened to me sob like an idiot before suggesting that I consider a different career path. Maybe something like Human Resources?
Me: “What the heck is Human Resources?”
Jack: “I don’t know. I guess they pay, hire and fire people…?”
After looking it up and learning that it’s SO much more than that, I decided I would try it. Long story short – I switch colleges, changed my degree plan, quit my job, and started a new job in HR.
I haven’t looked back since.
Since I worked full-time my entire college education, I graduated with years of experience. During those years I learned A LOT about dos and don’ts in the workplace; some of them I learned the hard way.
I launched FYP in June of 2017 in hopes that my experiences would help fresh graduates, young employees, and/or those who are in the beginning/middle phases of their career. I’m here to offer you the advice I wish I would’ve known when I first started out in my career.
FYP is a blog to help you lead in the workplace as a young professional and offers you the information, recommendations, resources and tips you need to do that.
Thank you for following along and for your continued support!
